The technician must have knowledge of generator setup procedures under the supervisor’s guidance. This job is about maintenance of the generators and understanding how to operate/maintain power grid under the supervision of two or more staff sergeants or above. They are assigned to maintain the generator set up for different requirements from time to time, like Medivac (helicopters), command post (CP), and search and rescue (SAR) missions.

The specialist should be able to locate the appropriate resistor that will allow for accurate water flow readings by using knowledge of how voltage affects different electrical conductivity values. The specialist should also be knowledgeable about how to locate and use diodes in order to take meter readings at night when there is no power available. Relays are necessary if there is no power available in order to get signals from other water meters so that accurate reading can be taken for billing purposes.

They also need to understand how to read generator voltage regulators. A voltage regulator is used to control the flow of power through electrical components. It is used to make sure that “electrical signals” are not lost by ensuring that the power output remains constant during fluctuations in electrical distribution. This item should be familiar with military generators and how they work, including the alternator field circuit breaker, overload relay, exciter field current limiter, and exciter field current regulator. The alternator field circuit breaker protects a generator from short-circuiting in external wiring when starting a running engine. Overload relays respond to abnormal operating conditions in AC systems. The exciter field current limiter responds to excessive excitatory field current in AC systems. The exciter field current regulator is the device that controls the amount of excitatory field current with the objective of maintaining a constant source voltage in AC systems.
